Embracing the Season

I am not one of those people who automatically loves fall. Sometimes, it feels like a welcome rest from the heat of summer, but other times, it brings a sense of foreboding. The past few years, I've been too occupied with pregnancy to really worry about fall and winter as much, so my feelings of dread this year came as a bit of a surprise.

I read this article a while ago and have thought about it ever since then. I determined that I needed to plan to love fall for all its seasonal goodness, pumpkin spice not included. James and I wrote down a bunch of ideas for fun things we'll do this fall, and I also set some goals. This week, I started working on my family history for the first time in 5 years. We have a tablet that I can use while I watch TV. It's a win-win situation because I get to be entertained and do some very important work at the same time.

Some fun things we're going to do include a Harry Potter movie marathon that will end on Halloween (activities for each book!) and Oktoberfest, which for us means sausage and root beer. It's great to have something to look forward to each week.

We've had a pretty busy week with getting one car fixed and trying to figure out what's wrong with the other. It's not serious, just a check engine light, but it's annoying because the code scanner I bought didn't work, and returning it added another thing to a busy week. We all got flu shots yesterday, so it feels like I got punched in the arm. I did have a really fun yoga party on Tuesday, and there's a Relief Society meeting (getting to know you) tonight. We also invited the Packards over for dinner Monday night. It's so fun to hang out with them! The smoked ribs they brought didn't hurt either. :)

Myles and Dad's Visit, Fear of Change, Weight Loss

We had a great visit with Dad and Myles. They arrived late Saturday night. We all went to Church Sunday, hung out, and played some games. I even took a nap! They are pretty rare these days since I don't really need them much.

Monday, Dad and Myles worked on the car, replacing a couple of belts, the water pump, and the tubing and motors for the windshield washer fluid. Of course the check engine light came on as I was driving it today. I know it's unrelated and probably not serious, but it's annoying to have only had 24 hours of no problems! Myles was also awesome enough to replace the basket drive and clutch in my washing machine. No more squealing!

The mornings are starting to be crisp and dark. Though I love the temperature, I'm not loving the dark. I really feel like I started loving working in the yard, and now I feel that it's being taken away from me too soon. James assured me that I'm going to find a project (or several) for when I can't work outside. I don't feel like winter specifically bothered me the last few years, but I had enough other things to deal with that it probably would have been secondary anyway.

I've officially lost 55 lbs. now, only 20 to go! I fit into all my regular pants now, so no more "size up" pants in my drawer. I'm really excited about that because I've been stuck in between sizes for many months now. Theoretically, I can go down one more size, but I like looser clothing anyway, so I'm not planning on it. We'll see.

Truffles, Myles and Lars's Visit

Saturday, the kids went to a birthday party, James went to work, and the youngest two took naps at the same time. Somehow, I got bored and decided to go online and look at the Lindt website. I've always got spending money that I don't know how to use, but I found at least 1 good use aside from yoga - truffles! I didn't realize that they make over 20 flavors because I can only find about 5 in the store. Since I really like the ones I've tried, I ordered a giant box with 10 different flavors. It should be coming today, and I'm so excited. Though Lindor truffles are my favorite chocolate in the world, I can somehow feel happy eating 2 a day. I don't know why I don't have the same result with chips. While Myles and Lars were here, I ate way too many of them. I've learned my lesson!

My brothers arrived late on Sunday night and left this morning. We did a lot over the past few days!

Fun stuff: playing Fall of Rome, carnival with the kids/neighbors for FHE, hunting X2, hanging out and watching TV, going to the temple, ward party today, Matilda with Joseph! (James won tickets to today's dress rehearsal, and my friend Claire is in it as the Trunchbull.)

Projects: working on the Yukon, installing another (much more convenient) outlet outside, picking tomatoes at my RS president's house and then canning them (20 qts.), painting the holes in the walls that I just finished patching, sorting through clothes I was given for my girls

Myles returns on Saturday night with Dad, but Lars will be in Rexburg for school. Crazy to think how much my life has changed since I started school there 13 years ago!

Labor Day, New Car

The most eventful thing of this past week was definitely my trip to see Mara over Labor Day. I left Sunday morning, and all was well until I got to the summit (around 8,000 feet). A warning light came on, but I thought it was for tire pressure. Since there was absolutely nowhere to stop, I figured I'd drive to the next town, Heber, and get their Walmart to look at my tires.

Well, that didn't happen. As I drove into town, the car wouldn't accelerate well. I had to stop once and barely made it through the light going 20 miles an hour. When I stopped next in the Walmart parking lot, my car wouldn't move at all except for very slowly backward, so I did a really bad parking job and got it out of the way. I first called Dad to see what was wrong, and he said it was the transmission.

To make a long story short, we had James's uncle pick the car up on Monday since he has a towing business. Since it was more expensive to fix than what we'd paid for it, we decided to scrap it and get a new one that costs more than $900. Ricky picked me up, so I missed church, but at least I made it to Mara's house.

We hung out the rest of the day, talked to families, and watched a movie. Monday, we went to the Latin American festival in Provo, which was fun. I got a torta but wished for tacos after the fact. They're hard to beat. Mara drove me to Vernal Monday night after dinner.

Since the kids had Tuesday off, we went to the library for story time and then to the Western Heritage museum next door. I think everyone had a good time. Mara and the kids went on a walk while I crashed on the couch. A couple days of stress really wear me down. Mara went to my yoga class with me, which was great!

Mara left after lunch yesterday, so things are pretty much back to normal. James has been looking at cars for the past few days and will hopefully get one today. I've been tackling my projects list and have one for Dad, Myles, and Lars to work on while they're here. We probably won't get it all done, but that's okay.

Samantha is officially 1! Today I'll find out exactly how big she is.
